What Does the Bible Say about Messiah’s Return?

As we have seen our last few blogs, the evidence from science, history, archaeology and fulfilled prophecy make a compelling case that the Bible is the true word of God.  So we would be wise to know what it says about the future.

Jesus said that he would return in power and judgment in the last days. When Jesus left Earth after his resurrection, two angels reminded his disciples of that future promise.

They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking into the sky? Jesus, whom you saw taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go.”¹ [Read more…]

Did the Old Testament Accurately Predict Jesus as the Messiah?

Reading the Old Testament, it becomes clear that Someone is coming. Bible scholar Ray Stedman says that “Someone” is God’s promised Messiah:

From the very beginning of the Old Testament, there is a sense of hope and expectation, like the sound of approaching footsteps: Someone is coming!… That hope increases…as prophet after prophet declares yet another tantalizing hint: Someone is coming!¹

Does Evidence Support the Bible?

Isaac Newton was the scientist famous for discovering gravity. Called by many as the greatest scientific mind prior to Einstein, Newton began investigating the Bible to determine whether or not it is authentic. Applying his brilliant mind to the evidence, Newton concluded,

“There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history.”¹

But wait a minute! Newton lived over 300 years ago. What are scientists and other scholars today saying about the Bible, and are the “sure marks of authenticity” that convinced him still valid today? [Read more…]

What Is God’s Name?

Three thousand years ago on a dark moonlit night in Israel, the psalmist David looked up in awe at an endless stream of sparkling stars. Struck by the greatness of creation in light of his own insignificance, he later recalled,

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.

What did David mean by God’s “name?” David addressed God as Yehovah Adoneynu” (Jehovah Adonai).1 The God of the Bible frequently used different names in revealing Himself to His people. His names in the Bible reveal an unfolding portrait of who He is and how He deals with us, conveying much deeper meanings than mere labels. [Read more…]

If Jesus Is God, Why Did He Cry Out on the Cross “My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?”

The Old Testament had foretold that God would come to earth as a child to be our Savior and Lord (Isaiah 9:6). It also foretold that this Savior, or Messiah, would suffer horribly as he took upon himself the sins of the world. So in some miraculous way, the Messiah would be both God and man. Several prophecies foretold that his suffering would be almost unbearable. Jesus claimed that he was that Messiah. [Read more…]

Proof in a Jar

What if the Christian scribes who copied scrolls of Isaiah and the other Old Testament prophetic books altered them to make them correspond to Jesus’ life?

This is a question many scholars and skeptics have asked. And it seems possible, even plausible at first glance. It would prevent us from making Jesus into a lying imposter, which seems highly unlikely, and it would explain the amazing accuracy of his fulfillment of prophecies. So, how do we know that the Old Testament prophetic books, such as Isaiah, Daniel, and Micah, were written hundreds of years before Christ, as purported? And if they were, how do we know Christians didn’t alter the texts later? [Read more…]

What Is the Real Meaning of Christmas?

Christmas means different things to different people. To most, it is a heartwarming time with family and friends. To many children, it’s about presents and Santa. To merchants, it means a season when many retailers finally begin making money.

But if you were to go back seven hundred years before the birth of Christ and ask the prophet Isaiah what it means to him, he would tell you Christmas is about the birth of a special child: [Read more…]

What are the Odds?

According to the Hebrew requirement that a prophecy must have a 100 percent rate of accuracy, the true Messiah of Israel must fulfill them all or else he is not the Messiah. So the question that either vindicates Jesus or makes him culpable for the world’s greatest hoax is, did he fit and fulfill these Old Testament prophecies? [Read more…]

Is Jesus Coming Back?

May 21st, 2011, was to be no ordinary day according to prominent radio evangelist, Harold Camping; it was to be the day Jesus returned to earth.  Twitters were going ballistic with speculation.  The media splash had many people wondering, “Could he be right?  Could this be the end of the world?”

Camping’s message of imminent doom was swallowed hook, line and sinker by some of his followers. Sixty year-old Robert Fitzpatrick spent his entire life’s savings of $140,000 on 1,000 subway-car placards and ads at bus stops warning, “Global Earthquake:  The Greatest Ever!  Judgment Day May 21, 2011.”  As he stood in Times Square in New York surrounded by onlookers, Fitzpatrick handed out leaflets waiting for Judgment Day to begin.

But it never came. On May 21st at 6 pm, nothing happened.  “Judgment Day” was a dud.  Fitzpatrick was left dumbfounded, broke, and muttering, “I do not understand why nothing has happened.” [Read more…]
