Return of the King

November 25, 2011 by mary

In J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the mythical land of Gondor is overrun by the orcs of Mordor. Aragorn must realize his true identity and purpose as the King of Men, in order that the final battle against evil can be won.

The roots of Tolkien’s plot of a returning king who destroys evil and restores peace to the world is taken from Jesus Christ’s words spoken to his followers. On several occasions he had told them that he would return when the time was right. They expected it to be soon, but it has now been nearly 2,000 years since Jesus left the Earth. Jesus had a job for his followers to do before he returned. [Read more…]

The Radical Claims of Jesus

November 4, 2011 by mary

As we look into Jesus’ own words, a pattern seems to emerge.  Jesus made radical assertions about himself that, if true, unmistakably point to his deity.

One day Jesus was debating some Pharisees at the Temple, when suddenly he told them he is “the light of the world.” It is almost bizarre to picture this scene, where a traveling carpenter from the lowlands of Galilee tells these PhDs in religion that he is “the light of the world?” Believing that Yahweh is the light of the world, they replied indignantly:

“You are making false claims about yourself” (John 8:13 NLT). [Read more…]

Is Jesus Jehovah?

May 6, 2011 by mary

Jesus Christ made some earth-shaking statements that stunned the Jewish religious leaders.  Once, after Jesus blurted out to them, “I am the light of the world”[1], the Pharisees challenged his authority in making such a claim.  Jesus answered by telling them he was sent by God, whom he called his Father. Furthermore, Jesus told them that the patriarch, Abraham, looked forward to seeing him (Jesus).[2]

What a shocking claim!  In their eyes, Jesus was an uneducated carpenter who should stay out of their exclusive world of interpreting the Scriptures and preaching about God.  Yet here he was, not only speaking intimately about God as his Father, but claiming to be the object of Abraham’s adoration.

Incredulous, the Jewish leaders rebuked him, “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”[3]  What Jesus said next not only shocked the Pharisees; it infuriated them. Jesus boldly told them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”[4] [Read more…]

Jesus Christ: Who Is He?

February 12, 2010 by mary

Jesus Christ has been called many things by many people, including a great man, a great teacher, and a great prophet. There is no legitimate scholar today that denies that Jesus is a historic figure that walked on this earth about 2,000 years ago, that he did remarkable wonders and acts of charity, and that he died a horrible death on a Roman cross just outside Jerusalem. The only dispute is whether Jesus was God incarnate who rose from the dead three days after His crucifixion. These are all matters of historical record that can be earnestly discovered and tested.
