Is Jesus Coming Back Soon?
For two thousand years, Christians have been waiting for Jesus to return. Not only did Jesus promise to return someday, but after he departed into the clouds, two angels said he would one day come back just as he had departed (Acts 1:1-11).
Can you imagine the reaction of the news media? A sudden burst of glory in the clouds visible worldwide as Jesus returns to set up his earthly Kingdom!
Although the date of Jesus’ return isn’t given, some biblical scholars believe Jesus’ return is imminent for three main reasons: Jerusalem is under Jewish control, Immorality is greatly increased and the Gospel is being proclaimed worldwide.
Israeli-Controlled Jerusalem
According to ancient Hebrew prophecies, the Messiah will return in the clouds and rule from Jerusalem when it is under Israeli control. However, after Jerusalem’s destruction in a. d. 70, Israel didn’t even exist for nearly 1,900 years. But, in 1948, Israel became a nation again, and since 1967, the Jewish people have controlled Jerusalem, a prerequisite for the return of Christ.
Increased Immorality
Another reason many scholars believe Jesus’ return is near is the increase of immorality. The apostle Paul told the early Christian believers that prior to Jesus’ return immorality would greatly increase (2 Timothy 3:1-9). This immorality will be manifested by greed, lust and a total departure from biblical morality. Although immorality has always existed, it is accelerating at an unprecedented pace today.
Gospel Proclaimed Worldwide
Jesus told his followers, “This gospel…will be proclaimed throughout the world, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14) Only since the radio, TV and the Internet has it been possible to proclaim the Gospel worldwide. Today, the good news of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed into all countries, fulfilling Jesus’ prediction.
Can We Believe Jesus’ Promise to Return?
Skeptics like Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins have scoffed at Jesus’ promised return as well as his resurrection from the dead. And of course, if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, he wouldn’t be alive and able to return to earth. Some skeptics decided to investigate the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection.
